Frequently Asked Questions:
What is your mission?
The Kaleidoscapes is an eco-theatre company dedicated to performing accessible storytelling and facilitating experiential learning in nontraditional spaces with those most affected by the climate crisis.
What’s an eco-theatre troupe?
We are a company of artist-activists who recognize the power of story to serve our planet. As a troupe, we emphasize a collaborative environment and open communication within our organization. When we show up to work, we bring our whole selves.
Why did you found this company?
The current ecological crisis directly affecting our Earth, flora, fauna, and people, is critically important. Without a healthy environment, theatre-making and story-sharing of any kind becomes obsolete. We founded this company to increase the public’s access to professional storytelling in the long-standing tradition of live, outdoor theatre. We invite our audiences to grapple with the environmental crisis through our art and inspire them to invest in care towards their own local habitat.
Where does the name The Kaleidoscapes come from?
Our namesake comes from alliding two terms: “kaleidoscopic landscapes,” meaning “many beautiful forms.” Just as a kaleidoscope is most striking when it turns, there is powerful artistic potential in embracing our continually shifting world. Our company began as a love letter to the multitude of ecosystems in our country and reminds us that our natural world will always be at the forefront of our work.
Where are you located?
When creating our company, we knew that it was a sustainable choice to inhabit virtual space more frequently than physical. Our staff resides primarily in Chicago and New York City, but by embracing the potential reach of digital connections, we have worked with artists across the globe. Our virtual administration also allows us to travel to underserved areas and adapt our programming wherever we may develop connections with communities.
What kind of work do you do?
We are a theatre company that offers live performances for all ages. We also provide experiential learning and opportunities to volunteer with local organizations surrounding the performance experience. Most recently, we’ve developed a supplemental education program, Story Guides, specifically designed for youth and educators available during the academic year.
Where do you perform?
We are most known for our outdoor productions adjacent to public land. Our goal is to be a staple in programming affiliated with the National Parks and to partner with other outdoor companies. However, The Kaleidoscapes’ plays can happen anywhere – a park, a prison, an auditorium, even online.
What do plays with The Kaleidoscapes look like?
Each play is specifically crafted with our audience and location in mind, and may look very different depending on our venue, time of day, and community. But you will recognize The Kaleidoscapes’ work as bold, playful, full of music, life, and possibilities for our shared future. We perform outdoors with the natural elements complementing our productions.
How do I see a K play?
We predominantly partner with local communities to tell their stories, so some of our plays might be specific to a location, and not accessible to the public at large. However, if you would like to see a performance from The Kaleidoscapes, you can help bring us to your local community! In addition, we plan to work with community partners in the cities of Chicago and New York City during the year, and we are exploring virtual options for our on-location plays to reach wider audiences.
How can I collaborate with The Kaleidoscapes?
Send an email inquiry to info@thekaleidoscapes.org! We are actively looking for new projects and relationships and look forward to talking.
What is the fee to work with The Kaleidoscapes?
We work on a sliding scale for full productions ranging from $15,000 to $100,000, depending on the content and complexity of work. We also meet you where you are and are able to engage in smaller level projects.
